And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers (Acts 2:42).

242 Groups

242 Groups are the “meat-and-potatoes” of Life Together at All Saints.  Based on the description of true Christian community in Acts 2:42-47, 242 Groups are multigenerational, dynamic, committed groups of friends seeking Christ together. The principles of life together in 242 groups are:

  • Bible study
  • Open Communication
  • Earnest Prayer
  • Mutual Ministry
  • Service Together
  • Crisis Care

We are transformed spiritually through these activities and the deep friendships that grow out of our time together.

Most 242 Groups meet every two weeks.  Call or email any group leader for more detailed information or contact Tim and Skyler McGee, the 242 Group Ministries Coordinators.

What does a 242 Group Look Like?

They are mixed gender, usually (but not always) multigenerational groups, including both singles and married couples.  They meet at different times and follow different patterns for growth according to the needs of the group and the skills and strengths of the group leader.  Each group has a leader, or a leader-couple, and a coordinator who handles the logistics.  Apprentice leaders are often being trained so they are ready to lead new groups in the months ahead.  Food is almost always a part of group life!

Each group determines what it will study together – a book of the Bible, an important book on spiritual growth, or a discussion of the preceding Sunday’s sermon.  Some groups follow the Evening Prayer service together.  Honest sharing and faithful prayer are essentials.

Although faithfulness and commitment are essential to growing trust and freedom in groups, 242 Groups do grow by healthy additions.  Renewal of commitments to a group, birthing of new groups and opportunities to different ways of “life together” (Men’s Ministry, Women’s Ministry, special study groups, special outreach and ministry groups) are part of healthy group life.

How do I join a Group?

You are free to join an existing 242 Group or to join a new group that is forming.  If you are interested in an existing group, contact someone from the group, or the group leader, directly.  Many people visit groups to see if there is a good “fit” before they decide. If you don’t have any particular group that you want to explore, or you are interested in connecting with a new group, then contact Skyler or Tim and they can guide you.

We start new groups on a periodic basis (but especially in September and January).  If you want to be a part of the excitement of getting a group off the ground, the McGees will help match you into a group that is emerging.  Or if you have a particular interest around which you want to see a group develop (mature singles? artists and musicians? the town of Carrboro, or inner city Durham?, or ___?) talk to the McGees for guidance and networking.
