Worship During Lent

Lent is a time of penitence, reflection, humility and renewal.  The goal of Lent is not a “once-a-year diet and extreme exercise routine”: it is a time to practice disciplines that reset our internal spiritual program and stand us in good stead throughout the year.  In the wisdom of the liturgical  church, worship during Lent is designed to actively help us participate in the broader spiritual goals of the season.  Therefore, it is quieter and more reflective with a stronger focus on repentance.

The service starts with the processional, followed by the opening acclamation and then the prayer of confession.  We will be singing a Kyrie (“Lord have mercy”) before the Scripture readings and a new Sanctus (“Holy, Holy, Holy”) during the Eucharist.  “Alleluia” is not proclaimed during Lent, as befitting a time of reflection, penitence and humility before the Lord.  The sanctuary will look a little different as a way to reminding us to take our true position of humility before the Lord.
